Honors and Awards 1998-99

Honors and Awards

Our current and former students and faculty continue to win numerous awards and distinctions.

Walter Kohn and John Pople shared the 1998 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. See article.

Steve Garoff became a fellow of the American Physical Society in recognition of his work on the wetting of surfaces.

Jim Hannon was the recipient of the 1998 Sandia National Lab Award for Excellence. Nancy and Jim also celebrated the birth of their first child, Thomas, in March.

The 1999 Julius Ashkin Teaching Award was presented to Ruth Chabay and Bruce Sherwood for their innovations in the teaching and learning of elementary physics.

The 1999 Hugh D. Young Graduate Student Teaching Award was presented to Brian Diggs of our department.

The Richard E. Cutkosky Alumni Award was presented at our commencement ceremony to seniors Helena McGahagan and Adrian Pope. This award recognizes outstanding seniors in the department and is supported by alumni contributions. The department is especially grateful to Mrs. Pat Cutkosky who was in attendance at this year's ceremony.

Senior Helena McGahagan is the 1999 Judith Resnik Award winner.

This award is given to an "outstanding woman in science and engineering" and is in memory of the late astronaut. Helena also received the 1999 Monteverde Award, honoring the woman in the Mellon College of Science having the highest academic record, and the 1999 Dr. J. Paul Fugassi Award.

Kirstin Purdy was a Resnik Award finalist.

Shane Davis and Michael O'Kelly were named 1999 Goldwater Scholarship winners.

Adrian Pope was the recipient of a National Science Foundation Fellow-ship. Adrian's graduate program will be in astrophysics at Johns Hopkins.

Freshman Carl Dahl won a National Alliance for Excellence Scholarship. The award is given to the country's most gifted young scholars and artists.

Seniors elected into Phi Beta Kappa are Doug Bramel, Helena McGahagan, Gregg Miller, James McCann, Aronne Merrelli, Adrian Pope, and Kirstin Purdy.

Students elected into Sigma Xi are: Cindi Dennis, Kelly Pellerin, James McCann, Chris Raymond, and Patrick Randerson.
