Physics has its origin in the irrepressible human desire to explore and understand the natural world. Physicists study an enormous range of phenomena, from large scale movement of galaxies to minute motions of molecules, atoms, and nuclei. The excitement of being part of this exploration motivates many young physicists. In addition, the application of discoveries to the solution of technological problems offers a vast field in which physicists make decisive contributions. The interplay of pure and applied physics has always been extremely fruitful and, today, ensures many rewarding career opportunities for physics students.
